This long masonry structure is a bank of coke ovens in the Nuttallberg Settlement. A coke oven is used to carbonize coal into coke by heating it in a oxygen deficient environment. This process produces coke which is generally used to make steel. Coal is heated to 1250 degrees(dry distillation) in a dome like oven called a beehive.
